Repeated contractions alter the geometry of human skeletal muscle.

چکیده
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of repeated contractions on the geometry of human skeletal muscle. Six men performed two sets (sets A and B) of 10 repeated isometric plantarflexion contractions at 80% of the moment generated during plantarflexion maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), with a rest interval of 15 min between sets. By use of ultrasound, the geometry of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle was measured in the contractions of set A and the displacement of the MG tendon origin in the myotendinous junction was measured in the contractions of set B. In the transition from the 1st to the 10th contractions, the fascicular length at 80% of MVC decreased from 34 +/- 4 (means +/- SD) to 30 +/- 3 mm (P < 0.001), the pennation angle increased from 35 +/- 3 to 42 +/- 3 degrees (P < 0.001), the myotendinous junction displacement increased from 5 +/- 3 to 10 +/- 3 mm (P < 0.001), and the average fascicular curvature remained constant (P > 0.05) at approximately 4.3 m(-1). No changes (P > 0.05) were found in fascicular length, pennation angle, and myotendinous junction displacement after the fifth contraction. Electrogoniometry showed that the ankle rotated by approximately 6.5 degrees during contraction, but no differences (P > 0.05) were obtained between contractions. The present results show that repeated contractions induce tendon creep, which substantially affects the geometry of the in-series contracting muscles, thus altering their potential for force and joint moment generation.

The effect of phytochemical compounds on indicators of oxidative stress, inflammation and skeletal muscle damage caused by physical activity
Physical activities are associated with increased production of reactive oxygen species. The production of reactive oxygen species is dependent of the intensity, duration and type of activity. Although the physiological amounts of reactive oxygen species are necessary to regulate cell reactions, their excessive production can cause numerous damages to the structure and function of cells and wea...
متن کاملMUSCARINIC RECEPTOR SUBTYPES IN SMOOTH MUSCLE FROM THE BODY OF HUMAN STOMACH
Up to date, there are four pharmacologically characterized subtypes of muscarinic receptors (M1, M2, M3 and M4). In our study we have investigated muscarinic receptor subtypes in smooth muscle layers of human stomach. Isolated preparations of longitudinal and circular muscle layers from human stomach were used. Acetylcholine, bethanechol, carbachol, pilocarpine and AHR -602 produced concen...
متن کاملActivation of aconitase in mouse fast-twitch skeletal muscle during contraction-mediated oxidative stress.
Aconitase is a mitochondrial enzyme that converts citrate to isocitrate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle and is inactivated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). We investigated the effect of exercise/contraction, which is associated with elevated ROS production, on aconitase activity in skeletal muscle. Humans cycled at 75% of maximal workload, followed by six 60-s bouts at 125% of maximum workload...
متن کاملRapid vasoregulatory mechanisms in exercising human skeletal muscle: dynamic response to repeated changes in contraction intensity.
We tested the hypothesis that vasoregulatory mechanisms exist in humans that can rapidly adjust muscle blood flow to repeated increases and decreases in exercise intensity. Six men and seven women (age, 24.4+/-1.3 yr) performed continuous dynamic forearm handgrip contractions (1- to 2-s contraction-to-relaxation duty cycle) during repeated step increases and decreases in contraction intensity. ...
متن کاملEccentric contraction-induced myofiber growth in tumor-bearing mice.
Cancer cachexia is characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass. While mouse skeletal muscle's response to an acute bout of stimulated low-frequency concentric muscle contractions is disrupted by cachexia, gaps remain in our understanding of cachexia's effects on eccentric contraction-induced muscle growth. The purpose of this study was to determine whether repeated bouts of st...
